Shadyside jewelry shop takes 2nd hit in week
John Henne was just feeling like things were back to normal at his Shadyside tiffany jewelry store.
The display cases were repaired and inventory restocked after a midday robbery last week, in which a gunman and an accomplice wielding a crow bar smashed glass and took off with jewelry.
About 12 hours after locking up Monday night, Henne got word of another brazen heist.
"I'm kind of at a loss for what to say here," said Henne, whose great-grandfather founded the business 123 years ago. Henne co-owns the business with his sister, Meg Henne Gibson. "I have no idea why this has happened twice in one week."
A dark sport utility vehicle crashed through the front doors and plate-glass windows of the Walnut Street store just after 4 a.m. Tuesday. Surveillance video shows glass shattering and a man jumping from the driver's seat, running through the store and apparently heading for a specific case.
He smashed the glass and grabbed 18 items, mostly titanium rings and necklaces, Henne said. Video silver key rings the burglar running back to the SUV and backing out quickly, momentarily catching the vehicle on a portion of the smashed door frame before fleeing toward Negley Avenue.
Police don't know if anyone else was in the vehicle, or if the incident is connected to the Jan. 11 daytime holdup, said burglary squad Sgt. Kevin Gasiorowski. Police made no arrests in the crimes.
Henne said damage from the first robbery was a few thousand dollars. As workers rebuilt the front door yesterday and prepared to replace the glass, Henne estimated this damage would be close to $20,000.
He said the jewelry stolen both times was "basically on the level of costume jewelry." Pricey jewels are removed from the display cases and locked elsewhere when the store closes, Henne said.
Before this month, the last theft from the store was 42 years ago, when a gunman held Henne's father, grandfather and customers in a back room while an accomplice ransacked the store.
Henne said while it was possible the incidents could be related to an unhappy customer or former employee, he doubts it.
"One of the things we strive for, and pride ourselves on, is doing right by our silver necklaces and customers, and I don't know of anyone who would have a grudge against us," he said.

Classic Date Night kicks off Valentine weekend
The Historic Yuma Theatre on Main Street is rolling out the red carpet and inviting the public to dress to the nines tonightFriday for a viewing of the classic 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's," starring Audrey Hepburn.
The romantic-themed movie, which is just on time for Valentine's weekend, will help raise much-needed funding for the Yuma Community Food Bank, as part of the Classic Date Night series.
"Classic Date Night is when we show classic movies, usually in black and white, to help acquire valentines day jewelry for YCFB and 49 other nonprofit agencies that we serve in Yuma such as the Crossroads Mission, and the Boys and Girls Club," said Shelly Barbato, events manager.
"It's going to be a glamorous evening, and we are actually going to roll out a real red carpet for people to stroll in on. In the olden days, people would get dressed up for a night on the town, but today a lot of people just throw on an old pair of jeans and some flip-flops. We want to give them a chance to get dressed up Hollywood style."
Barbato said the event has been a lot of fun in the past and will give couples and friends a chance to do something new and and exciting off the beaten path.
"It's very easy for your boyfriend to purchase tickets. Otherwise you could get together with your friends and have a girls night out, and since the movie is being shown on Friday, you'll still be able to be with your significant other on Valentine's Day. This isn't the same old dinner and a movie you could do at any time."
Romantic procrastinators will have a chance to escape their impending day in the doghouse by bidding on a fine piece of jewelry at the event.
"There is a silent auction for a beautiful necklace which was donated by Paul Bensel Jewelers," said Barbato. "It is in a heart shape and is encrusted with diamonds."
Barbato says that catering will be provided, and that complimentary popcorn and soft drinks will be valentines jewelry throughout the evening.
Tickets are still available at $27 per person or $40 for a couple. Tickets can be purchased by calling 343-1243, Ext. 18; online at www.yumafoodbank.org/datenight; or at the theater entrance the night of the event.
Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and the movie will begin at 7.
Barbato said people will be able to support important charities just by watching the movie.
"All of the proceeds go straight into our programs, because the expenses associated with hosting the event are mostly paid for by our sponsors. This is one of those ways that we can remind the community that we are still here, and raise money.
"In these harsh economic times, the number of those in need of our services has increased by 30 percent. In 2008 we had 124,000 people visit us to receive food. We processed over 11 million pounds of food last year alone.
"One dollar can purchase 11 pounds of food, so if someone gives us $5, we can purchase 55 pounds of valentine's day jewelry gifts, which goes a long way. Donations are still not where we need them to be, but we're still hopeful that the community will see our needs and be able to give some back."

Down 5-0, Lady Vols top MTSU in dramatic fashion
Jessica Spigner hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a 6-5 come-tiffany-behind victory over Middle Tennessee State (5-15) on Wednesday night at Lee Softball Stadium.
Trailing 5-0, UT scored a run in the fifth on a single by Kelly Grieve.
Spigner hit a two-run home run in the sixth for her team-leading 11th of the season, to cut the deficit to 5-3.
With two outs in the seventh, Grieve hustled to beat out an infield single. Ashley Andrews followed with a single just over shortstop Brittney Banania's glove. With two strikes, Tiffany Huff delivered an RBI-single to center to score Grieve and make it 5-4.
With runners on first and second, Spigner's low liner landed just over the third base bag and valentines gifts down into the corner. Andrews scored easily to tie the game. On the throw to the plate, catcher Laurie Anna Cooley collided with Huff in an attempt to keep her from scoring, but the runner was ruled safe.
Freshman Cat Hosfield was not sharp for the No. 6 Lady Vols (24-3), allowing five runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings and struck out four. However, senior Danielle Pieroni (4-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
Huff had two hits to extend her hitting streak to 16 games and Grieve had three hits.
"I will take full responsibility for the team not being prepared to play tonight," Lady Vols co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "We know that we are better than we showed in the early innings. Despite that, Karen (co-head coach Weekly) and I are very proud of the character and fight our squad demonstrated by valentines jewelry back from a 5-0 deficit to win for the second time in two weeks. Middle Tennessee is a much improved ballclub and played flawless softball tonight."
